MEI Lan-Fang (1894 - 1961) was the best-known Peking Opera actor who played female role like “Qing Yi” very well. He’s a superlative singer, actor and dancer of Peking Opera.
Mei Lan-Fang began studying Peking Opera when he was very young. He enriched the stage performance by learning from Chinese Kungfu, like the swordplay in his Farewell My concubine. He paid special attention on the ladyship of his performance. It was said that once he even pretended to attack his wife to observe her frightened reaction and then apologize to her because he did not satisfy with one of his actions in a play. His wonderful performance won him a special fame. A bunch of female role actors and actresses follow his style.
