Chou or clown roles are marked by their white nose and eyes. This character is sometimes positive, kind-hearted and humorous, but sometimes negative, mean or silly.
In modern operas, the performance of Chou has developed rapidly. In general, Chou do not focus on singing, but the dialogue is clear and fluent. According to the social positions, characters and skills demanded, the Chou roles are divided into two categories: Wenchou and Wuchou. Both have their own special features.
Wenchou always refers to those playboys, jailers, barmen, bellmen and old soldiers. Wuchou requires a good command of the martial arts and acrobatics. No matter wenchou or wuchou, they are both funny, cunning roles like comics.
